This was the first time Shana met my Ukrainian/Russian friends, so we gave her a lesson in Russian Drinking 101. Some basics: according to Russian tradition an alcoholic is someone who either drinks alone or without a reason, therefore everyone has to drink simultaneously and each shot of vodka must be accompanied by a short toast such as “na zdorovie” (“to health”) or “za liubov” (“to love”). We then clink our glasses, knock down the shot, and take a bite of a pickle as a chaser. This is repeated every 10 minutes or so, for the next few hours. Moderation isn’t understood.
